What
is your spiritual quotient? Do you sometimes feel like an
in-effective, powerless Christian? Why?
We
know that as humans we have certain things we need to do every day to
maintain a healthy physical body (I am including your mind as part of
your body). We need to get enough sleep, eat properly, exercise,
rest, work, and play. We need to learn. We must interact socially.
But
what about Jesus? He did all of these things, as he was the son of
man. Jesus, while physically on earth, was wholly human and wholly
God as evidenced by His human birth of a virgin young woman.
What
about the spiritual side of Jesus? The miracles, signs and wonders
that followed him are evidence of His divine nature—or are they?
Let’s look at that for a moment.
During
His earthly ministry, Jesus
Christ
touched and transformed countless lives. The four Gospels
record 37 miracles of Jesus, only a small portion of the multitudes
of people who were made whole by our Savior. The closing verse of
John's Gospel
says, "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them
were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have
room for the books that would be written." (John 21:25, NIV)
Below is a list of the
miracles of Jesus described in the New Testament, along with
corresponding Bible passages. These supernatural acts of love and
power drew people to Jesus, revealed His divine nature, opened hearts
to the message
of salvation,
and caused many to glorify God.
As much as possible, these
miracles of Jesus are presented in chronological order.

How
did Jesus do these things? Not as God, for he sacrificed His divinity
in order to save us. In order to die for our sins, he had to become
our sins. This he could only do as a man, NOT as God, for God cannot
be in the same place as sin.
No,
Jesus did all these things as the Son of Man. Jesus
is referred to as the “Son of Man” 88 times in the New Testament.
A first meaning of the phrase “Son of Man” is as a reference to
the prophecy of Daniel
7:13-14,
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a
son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the
Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. He was given
authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of
every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be
destroyed.” The description “Son of Man” was a Messianic title.
Jesus is the One who was given dominion and glory and a kingdom. When
Jesus used this phrase, He was assigning the Son of Man prophecy to
Himself. The Jews of that era would have been intimately familiar
with the phrase and to whom it referred. Jesus was proclaiming
Himself as the Messiah.
A second meaning of the phrase “Son of Man” is that Jesus was truly a human being. God called the prophet Ezekiel “son of man” 93 times. God was simply calling Ezekiel a human being. A son of a man is a man. Jesus was fully God (John 1:1), but He was also a human being (John 1:14). First John 4:2 tells us, “This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.” Yes, Jesus was the Son of God—He was in His essence God. Yes, Jesus was also the Son of Man—He was in His essence a human being. In summary, the phrase “Son of Man” indicates that Jesus is the Messiah and that He is truly a human being.

Other than Luke 2:41-52, the Bible does not tell us anything about Jesus’ youth. From this incident we do know certain things about Jesus’ childhood. First, He was the son of parents who were devout in their religious observances. As required by their faith, Joseph and Mary made the yearly pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. In addition, they brought their 12-year-old son to celebrate His first Feast in preparation for His bar mitzvah at age 13, when Jewish boys commemorate their passage into adulthood. Here we see a typical boy in a typical family of that day. Jesus would have been expected to memorize the Torah, including (at the very least) the first five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
I
believe this is where Jesus learned His Father’s character, and
where he first heard God’s voice. I believe this was His first
personal connection to God, where he began to hear God’s heart. As
he prayed, he developed intimate communication with His heavenly
Father. Surely God was very pleased!
Each
of the things we need to do every day in the physical realm as
“children of man”, we must also do the equivalent in the
spiritual realm as “children of God” and heirs with Jesus to the
Kingdom.
Jesus
took great care of His spirit first—His relationship with His
Father. He made the decision
to live a life without sin. He studied, and fed
himself on
God’s word. He clothed
himself
spiritually. (Ephesians 6:11--11 Put
on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the
devil’s schemes.)
He
protected His spirit with God’s Word in the desert :
Matthew 4:1-11
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness
4 Then
Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the
devil. 2 After
fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
3 The
tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell
these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus
answered, “It is written: ‘Man
shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the
mouth of God.’”
5 Then
the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest
point of the temple. 6 “If
you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is
written:
“‘He
will command His angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus
answered him, “It is also written:
‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8 Again,
the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the
kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
9 “All
this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship
me.”
10 Jesus
said to him, “Away from me, Satan!
For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him
only.’”
11 Then
the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
John
5:19
19 Jesus
gave them this answer: “Very truly
I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he
sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also
does.
His
intimate relationship with His Father (our Father!) is what made all
of these miracles possible. Keep in mind, he was here on earth
setting an example for us to live by. He did not
choose the easy way out, having a “cake and eat it, too”
mentality. He chose to suffer horribly for the joy that followed.
Hebrews
12:2
2 fixing
our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy
set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down
at the right hand of the throne of God.
So
again, I ask: What is your daily average spiritual quotient? Not just
Sunday, but every day? As Christians, none of us are “only human”.
2
Cor 5:17
17 Therefore,
if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed
away; behold, the new has come.
How
well do you provide for, care for and protect your physical body and
life? Let’s look back at our original list and see what that
entails. Do you always:
- Get enough sleep
- Eat properly
- Exercise
- Rest
- Work
- Play
- Learn
- Interact socially
Every
day? Most of us find ourselves lacking in several areas at any given
time. For the sake of illustration, let’s look at it this way:
Spiritual
life
Physical
life
So,
if you live as you should physically
80% of the time, the bottom number would be 80. The same goes for the
top line as “spiritual”.
You
see, if you are 60/40, or 40/60, you are deficient. Your mind, body
and spirit is out of balance. Only 100/100 is totally balanced. How
can we possibly attain that? That is “perfection”! And why should
we even try?
Well,
remember, we are not “only human”. Because of Christ’s torture,
death resurrection and ascension, we are 100%
forgiven (Ephesians 1:7--
7 In
him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in
accordance with the riches of God’s grace)
Colossians 1:13-14
13 For
he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into
the kingdom of the Son he loves,
14 in
whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
And
we are 100% justified:
Romans
5:18
18 Consequently,
just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also
one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.
And
we are 100% empowered:
Luke
10:19
19 I
have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to
overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
Alone
we can’t possibly nurture ourselves enough spiritually. But our
Father, through Jesus, gave us the Holy Spirit. And one of the fruits
of the Spirit is self-discipline:
Galatians
5:22-24
22 But
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness
and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 Those
who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions
and desires.
Just
as Jesus chose
to live a life without sin, so must we. How? By His grace. If we do
sin, we must ask God’s forgiveness and repent. To repent means to
decide to turn in another direction, or change your ways. In God’s
eyes and heart that sin no longer exists. We are not just “sinners
saved by grace”!
Romans
6:11
11:
"In the same way, you should
see yourselves as being dead to the power of sin and alive with God
through Christ Jesus." -
Sin has lost its power. We are free to live as Christ would have us
live.
We
must learn of Jesus’ nature. How, what and why he did what he did.
Read and learn His Word. Get to know Father, son and Holy Spirit
intimately. Study Jesus’ relationship with the Father. Learn what
it was like. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you how you can have
the same relationship Jesus did, with Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
YOUR
PART is to read and study His word carefully and diligently. Then, as
you do, God will do HIS part. He never
denies His presence to His children. Ask. Seek. Knock.
Matthew
7:7
7 “Ask
and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the
door will be opened to you.
I
promise—if you do these things seeking God in love, with all of
your heart:
Jeremiah
29:12-14
12 Then
you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to
you. 13 You
will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
14 I
will be found by you,” declares the Lord
GOD
WILL SHOW UP. He will reveal himself to you with great love and joy.
Don’t get discouraged. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide and help you.
You
will see a difference in your life. You will, if you choose to say
yes, find that signs and wonders and miracles will follow you:
Mark
16:15-18
"And
these signs will follow those who believe: "In My name they will
cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up
serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt
them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover."
You
will begin
to carry out the great commission:
Matthew 28:16-20
The Great Commission
16 Then
the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had
told them to go. 17 When
they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
18 Then
Jesus came to them and said, “All
authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Therefore
go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I
am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
YOU
will have the authority and ability to do those things. What God does
for one he does for all. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.
YOU will heal, baptize, deliver.
Be
warned—the extent that you are willing to be caring and mindful to
your physical body will directly affect your spiritual body. And I
believe the reverse is also true.
My
suggestion is this; before you open your eyes in the morning, “clothe
yourself with Jesus”.
Romans
13:14
14 Rather,
clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about
how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
And
be mindful of your spirit. Do a “self check” and realize that you
are hosting the Holy Spirit. Be physically and spiritually healthy!
Part
of knowing God’s character and hearing His voice is learning who
you really are. You will begin to grow in confidence of how God sees
you as you grow in knowledge of who God is.
As
you grow in the Spirit, you will “shed the scales from your eyes”
Acts
9:18
18 Immediately,
something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see
again. He got up and was baptized,
You
will see how much of your life is affected by the enemy, and how much
is just messed up by your own wrong decisions. Either way, you will
realize you have the skill set and the authority to change these
things! It’s very exciting.
2
Corinthians 10:3-4
3 For
though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
4 The
weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the
contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
None
of us is an island. We must surround ourselves with the body of
Christ; those who lift us up, not tear us down. The enemy will try to
stop you, but he WILL NOT SUCCEED.
Work
on this every day.
Make the effort. Allow it to be your number one priority. Only after
doing our own work, not being a “parked car”, can we follow
Jesus’ example. Only then will you begin to be the person God
created you to be, living out the purpose he created you for.
2
Peter 1:10
10 Therefore,
my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling
and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble
Then
you will change the world by taking back what was handed over to
satan in the garden. The only reason satan has any control over the
world is because, in the Garden of Eden, mankind chose to partner
with him rather than God.
It
is time we took back what was created for us to rule. We need to
reclaim our world. God gave us the authority:
Jesus
died to recapture the authority Satan had stolen through Adam’s
disobedience in the Garden. Jesus was called the last Adam :
45 So
it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the
last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
After
securing that power and authority, He freely gave it over into the
hands of those who would believe in Him—you and me. We have the
honor to participate in the divine nature:
2
Peter 1:3-4
Confirming One’s Calling and Election
3 His
divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through
our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
4 Through
these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that
through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped
the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
But
you must know
yourself to be 100/100. Let us work together to reclaim our world.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you get to
100
